AIMSSEC
AIMSSEC is a not-for-profit organisation working to empower teachers to improve education in disadvantaged communities in Africa according to the Equity Principle that educational opportunities should be equal for all to provide an escape from the poverty trap. AIMSSEC offers a 3-year sequence of seven professional development courses to train mathematics subject leaders, and also free learning resources tailored to the needs of schools with large classes and limited resources. More than 50 alumni are teaching assistants for AIMSSEC or coordinators in their home areas. AIMSSEC depends, for all its work, on sponsorship funding.
In 2012 AIMSSEC won the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers in Developing Countries.
The small AIMSSEC team, based in Cape Town, is assisted by an international team of over 40 academics working for AIMSSEC working in their spare time, who give their time freely as unpaid volunteers. There is a shared belief that we must learn from mathematics education research, and that teaching for the 21st century must be different from the past because different skills are needed in this radically changed and rapidly changing society.
AIMSSEC, established in 2003 in South Africa, is the Schools Enrichment Centre of AIMS South Africa (the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences). AIMS has developed into a pan African Network with higher education institutes in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Rwanda and the mission to empower talented young Africans to be creative leaders in Science and technology.
Edu Caixa
GTEN works with one of the Edu Caixa groups to produce versions of the GTEN workshops online as part of the Edu Caixa Hello Math! Programme. Caroline presents the workshops in Spanish and AIMSSEC resources are translated.
Bubbly Maths
Bubbly Maths has a vision to engage children to love learning and enjoy mathematics and a mission to make maths fun for every child on Earth. The Edutainment method takes children through and beyond fun, leading to deeper understanding and engagement in the infinite puzzles that are mathematics.
Bubbly Maths uses AIMSSEC and GTEN resources and brings valuable experience and presentation skills to GTEN.
Schools, families and other groups can book Bubbly Maths fun workshops, fun shows, fun festival events, fun teacher sessions or fun family sessions. Did we mention that what they do is fun? They do make maths fun but didn’t say they make it easy! The best maths activity is the one that grabs you where you are, engages your mind and takes you to the next level.
