The begining
The story about GTEN is linked to the pandemic. Caroline, as a mathematics entertainer, was only able to perform online. Toni, as an educator, wanted to share more widely the AIMING HIGH online treasure trove of lesson resources. So, we have collaborated online to develop the GTEN project based on our previous work and building on our different strengths and experiences.
From 2015 we had together run annual 30-minute Global Maths and Science Lessons attracting tens of thousands of participants. Caroline is bilingual and in 2019 we had started online workshops for teachers in Spain and Spanish speaking countries.
Then, in 2020, we started helping children who could not be at school with home learning. Each AIMING HIGH Inclusion and Home Learning Guide offers a short starter to engage all learners working together, followed by maths tasks suitable for each age and stage from 5 to 18 years, designed to enable each individual to start at a point where they know enough to succeed and then to progress to the next stage.
Spiral Learning Path
The Home Learning Guides are based on the concept of the spiral learning path. School years are a part of a lifelong journey.
School students return to the same concepts year after year building on what they have previously learned.
We were asked to offer workshops to support communities in Jamaica and Nigeria where children are attending classes in church halls and community centres. So GTEN was born and launched on 23 January 2021 with an online party involving children, parents and teachers in Jamaica, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. Other countries are welcome to join.
GTEN offers monthly online workshops for both primary and secondary teachers, continuing training for AIMSSEC alumni, free online learning resources on the AIMING HIGH Network, the annual Global Maths and Science Lesson and the GTEN online community, Daily Maths Starters and weekly Happy Maths Hour broadcasts on the AIMSSEC Facebook page.
